huy ngoài chiến trường, tôi cần phải tận dụng mọi phương tiện hỏa lực cũng như đường lối
chiến thuật để bảo vệ mạng sống cho đồng đội của tôi. Đôi lúc với tính nhân bản, tình người
với con người cùng chung màu da, chung tiếng nói, tôi cảm thấy cay đắng mà than rằng: “Trời
đã phạt Mẹ VN...”
Bao năm sương gió ngoài chiến trận, chí lớn chưa tròn, đại cuộc dang dở, giờ đây đồng đội
bên nhau, với lòng tương kính, người lính già mắt mờ chân chậm, đôi lúc quên trước nhớ sau,
mong rằng mọi chiến hữu quên đi những hờn giận nhỏ nhen, hẹp hỏi mà hãy nghĩ đến cái
chung to lớn quan trọng hơn, để cùng nhau đoàn kết, làm gương tốt cho thế hệ hậu duệ tin
tưởng và kính trọng. Xin hỏi, còn bao nhiêu thời gian nữa, còn bao lần gặp nhau để tay bắt mặt
mừng, vang khúc “Cờ bay..Cờ bay?!”

SILVER STAR MEDAL (Gold Star in lieu of the Second Award) to

MAJOR NGUYEN THANH TRI

VIETNAMESE MARINE CORPS

for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the Republic of Vietnam. At 1745 on 2 February
1969, the First Battalion, Vietnamese Marine Corps was committed to assist a United States Army
Armored Cavalry troop and one company of Regional Forces who were engaged in combat with a well
entrenched Viet Cong battalion. Major Tri skillfully formulated a tank infantry assault using close air
support and artillery which proceeded well for 200 meters, but the tracked vehicles were forced to
stop due to intense enemy ϐire which had damaged three armored personnel carriers.
Major Tri immediately and continuously exposed himself to the withering hail of enemy ϐire in
order to coordinate the withdrawal of his unit and wounded personnel. After having established a
defensive perimeter and upon completion of the evacuation of the wounded, he formulated a plan
to attack the enemy again by air strikes, positioning of artillery and a night attack, whereupon Major
Tri placed himself in an exposed position to control the movement of his advancing battalion. His
courage and keen professional knowledge in directing artillery and ϐlare ships accounted for a highly
successful night attack over unfamiliar terrain. Major Tri’s courage and professional knowledge
greatly enhanced the morale and combat efϐiciency of the Vietnamese Marine Corps and contributed
signiϐicantly to the success of the operation which resulted in one Viet Cong captured, 50 Viet Cong
killed and numerous automatic weapons and small arms captured. Major Tri’s actions were in
keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
